Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS): Generally CTS represents a grouping of complaints attributed to the compression of the median nerve in the wrist. It is one of the most prevalent syndromes of Repetitive Stress Injuries and/or Cumulative Trauma Disorders within the musculoskeletal disorder category. The carpal tunnel is a narrow tunnel that extends from the hand to the wrist, through which the tendons and a nerve called the median nerve pass. When a tendon becomes inflamed, the median nerve gets pinched and causes pain through the arm and/ or hand. Traditionally, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome was related to repetitive motion activities associated with professions such as hair dressers, dental technicians, keyboard users and meat cutters. Current studies show that more people not categorized as work related or related to any specific repetitive motion activity have the same complaints and findings.

  • Symptoms: Include tingling, numbness, "pins or needle" sensation, weakness and/or pain in the fingers, hands, wrist or forearm.

Tennis & Golfer's Elbow (Epicondylitis): It is a condition where inflammation of the elbow tendons at the bony margin causes tenderness, soreness and pain. There are two types of epicondylitis; one is known as lateral epicondylitis or Tennis Elbow, the other as medial epicondylitis or Golfer's Elbow.

In mild forms, it may be evident only after vigorous activities and sporadically. In more severe cases, the pain can be excruciating. Typically, one can put a finger directly on the point of maximum tenderness along the joint capsule (outside part of the elbow).
    • Symptoms: Pain is exhibited on the lateral (outside) part of the elbow. Many simple hand and arm actions such as gripping, lifting and carrying can become extremely painful and / or difficult. When it is found on the inside of the elbow, the tendonitis is called Golfer's Elbow or medial epicondylitis.

  • Symptoms: Include pain, swelling, inflammation, stiffness and tenderness at or around a joint. Areas known to exhibit tendonitis are the knees, shoulders, heels and the elbow.
  • Treatment: For tendonitis of the elbow, we recommend that you try the BandIT. It helps alleviate symptoms in various ways.   • Do simple stretching exercises to increase the range of motion and prevent stiffness.
  • In the early stages of Repetitive Stress Injuries, icing and taking anti- inflammatory medications can help reduce pain and swelling.

1.) With the BandIT comfortably in place, grip a racket ball or some squeeze- type device. Hold for the count of 5; Relax and squeeze again. Repeat 10 times.

2.) With the BandIT in place, straighten your arm, palm upward, thumb out and extended. Take your other hand and passively extend your fingers backward. Hold this for 20 seconds. Repeat 3 times a day.

3.) If you experience numbness or tingling in your hand at night, you can wear it during sleep. Additionally, you should keep it on during all work-outs or daytime activities which aggravate the condition.

 

It is important to follow the instructions for use. It should be placed on your forearm no tighter than is necessary to keep the device in place during the activity which irritates you. It should not be tightened like a tourniquet. The degree of tightness will depend upon the activity being performed.

One plate should sit directly on top of the forearm, the other directly under. Slide the bottom plate along the Velcro band to create equal side openings. Kneecap (Patella) Tracking Disorder: This is a condition in which people experience an imbalance in the knee area that causes the kneecap (patella) to tilt or shift out of place during motion. For example, one can experience a snapping, grinding or pop-like sensation of the kneecap. One can experience pain or discomfort during activities like walking, climbing or descending stairs.

  • Symptoms: Can include swelling around the knee and pain under and around the kneecap. The most common effects are popping, catching and slipping of the kneecap when the knee bends or extends. Also, one can experience a feeling that one's knees are going to buckle or give away.
  • Treatment: Dr. Fareed developed the KneedIT for his patients with this condition. The KneedIT is designed to assist in aligning and stabilizing the kneecap. This reduces stress on the tendons and muscles, and acts as a dynamic pump which helps reduce inflammation. Osgood-Schlatter's Disease (OSD): This is a condition in which rapidly growing children, typically during their growth spurt, experience knee pain due to overuse of the knee. As a result of constant physical activity, traction along the kneecap (patellar) tendon that attaches to the growing shinbone (tibia) area causes a bony prominence to develop at the insertion of the kneecap tendon. The bony prominence tends to be painful during activities and can feel extremely tender and sensitive when touched. OSD is more common among boys, especially those who actively participate in sports. However, in recent years there has been an increase in the number of girls with OSD because more females are becoming active in sports related activities.

  • Symptoms: Pain, inflammation, tenderness or swelling in the front or below the knee and over the shinbone area. The common signs of Osgood-Schlatter's disease are increased pain during physical activities and pain relief during periods of relaxation.
  • Treatment: The typical treatment for Osgood-Schlatter's disease involves modification and/or complete discontinuation of all sports activities, the use of anti-inflammatory medications and occasionally the use of wraps. We also recommend the KneedIT to help alleviate the symptoms and stresses of Osgood-Schlatter's Disease. The KneedIT can be very beneficial because its unique anatomic design applies selective compression over the kneecap (patellar) tendon during activity. Chondromalacia: When the kneecap moves out of its groove, it can create damage that results in the loss or softening of cartilage that typically covers the back of the kneecap. This roughening of the under surface of the kneecap can cause pain whenever pressure is applied to the knee during activities such as climbing and descending stairs, kneeling, squatting, sitting, standing or walking for prolonged periods of time. The pain that is experienced comes from the tissues along the sides of the kneecap and not the kneecap itself.

  • Symptoms: Include pain below or on the sides of the knee and grinding of the kneecap (patella) over the upper thigh bone (femur) when the knee is extended. Typically, there is no locking or buckling of the knees like the symptoms experienced in Kneecap (Patella) Tracking Disorder.
  • Treatment: We recommended that you try the KneedIT and believe that it can be very beneficial in treating the symptoms of chondromalacia. IT (Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome) : The iliotibial band is a long piece of muscle and tendon (ligament) that starts on the outside of the thigh and extends from the top of the hip to the outside of the knee. Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome is a condition where, as a result of repetitive stresses along the iliotibial band, irritation occurs where the band attaches along the outside of the knee. Friction from repetitive bending and extension of the knee can cause the iliotibial band to thicken. It then rubs over the bone and produces inflammation and pain. Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome typically occurs in runners but also can be found in individuals who vigorously hike or walk.

  • Symptoms: Can include tenderness, inflammation, clicking and pain on the outside of the femur area (bone that extends from the pelvis to the knee) . People with this syndrome tend to experience pain during excessive running, hiking or walking, and relief during periods of rest .
  • Treatment: The typical treatment for this condition involves modification of activities (especially a period of rest) anti-inflammatory medication and wrapping. The KneedIT has been utilized by many runners to help with this condition because its unique design allows for selective compression during the activities which cause and aggravate this problem.
